“How can one kill such a thing?” Tarzan asked. “And what is this blue box?”
“Well, Tarzan, I am a Time Lord, I travel through time and space inside this blue box, called a TARDIS. Like you are Lord of the jungle I am a Lord of time. Unfortunately, there is another Time Lord called the Master. He’s evil and has managed a way to tear at the fabric of time for his own purposes. If he continues to do this, all histories and the universe as we know it will collapse. None of us will exist. The TARDIS told me to collect the three of you as the best possible defense for this threat. Together, we can stop the Master and save all of what we hold dear. All of what is.”
“How did our machine come to choose us? Why us?” asked James.
“It’s an emergency program that only activates if all of time itself is in danger. I never thought there would be a need for it. Now I’ve been proven wrong. It is interesting that all of you are from Earth, but I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised.”
“Why not?”
“Because, Mr. Bond, Earth is a Temporal Nexus Point and a great deal that happens here affects the universe. It’s really quite interesting, but you might not be interested in that, come to think of it.”
“Doctor,” Holmes said, “I suggest we get going. From what you explain, time is not a luxury we have.”
“Agreed,” answered the Doctor and they filed into the TARDIS.
Upon entry, Tarzan’s eyes widened and he put a hand on his knife while gripping a handrail. “Incredible wizardry!”
“Um, not actually. It is science, but it’s kind of long on explanation. Just know that you are totally safe here in the TARDIS.” The Doctor threw a few switches and the console grinded to life with flashing lights that still left Tarzan gazing in wide eyed wonder. Sherlock Holmes leaned against a support structure with his pipe in his teeth. He didn’t light it, just held it there. His gaze showed him to be far away in thought. James watched the console and the Doctor working on it. He tried to mentally note all the switches and buttons that the Doctor used in case he might have to use this machine himself to get home.
A sudden lurch threw all of the men enough to make them grasp for balance. The TARDIS shuddered and the cloister bell rang.
“What’s going on? I thought we were safe in here!” James barked.
“Something’s altering our landing coordinates, forcing us to land someplace else. Hang on!” In a few moments the shuddering stopped as did the console. “We’ve landed.”
They stepped out onto a knoll covered in red grass. Far down the hill sides a jungle stretched out before them. On the other side they could see a domed city of bright lights.
“Where are we, Doctor?” asked James.
“We are on my home world, Gallifrey. Only, the grass isn’t supposed to be red here and that jungle certainly wasn’t there before.”
“Doings of the Master then,” Holmes noted and the Doctor nodded in response.
“I have never seen such levels of sorcery,” Tarzan said, “but I do know the jungle. Perhaps that is why your machine sought for me.”
“Realities are crossing here, being pulled together into a hodgepodge of places and things. We’ll have to be careful, anything could happen here.”
“Well, what are we waiting for?” Bond started walking down the hill.
Far across the jungle in the city, the Master watched them on a large orb shaped device.
“Good, Doctor, very good. Come home. Come see what I have done.”
