Government scheme to solve student debt problem

University students who live at home may not have to pay for their tuition fees if a new scheme by the government goes ahead.

The scheme, which is being considered by the government, aims to help students avoid being stuck in student debt upon graduating.

The scheme may mean that those living at home will not be entitled to any student funding such as a student loan as a result.

Maggie Scott, Assistant Chief Executive of the Association of Colleges said: "It's a novel idea and hopefully it's going to attract young people and adults who haven't thought about going to university before."

Wes Streeting, President of the National Union of Students (NUS), however, stated that the scheme would limit the choice of courses avaliable to students as they will be more likely to settle for a university based closer to home as a bid to save costs.

Most college students and recent graduates are not saddled with oppressive education loans, according to a report issued by the College Board in August. But the report also documented a surprising and troubling increase in the debt loads shouldered by students attending the lowest-cost schools of all -- local, public community colleges.One-third of all new bachelor's degree recipients in June of 2008 started their working lives without a penny in federal or private educational debt. Only 10% of last year's graduates owed more than $40,000, according to the lead author of the report, College Board researcher Patricia Steele. For more details please visit us at debt management.
