One more for the Girls, but the chaps may want to contribute too!

Following on from a recent shout out by Beth Kanter for prep for her She's Geeky conference seminar, and the recent publishing of the Web Design 2007 survey showing a lack of women responding to the survey, I posted on my blog earlier about Women in Technology - are we visible?

What do you think? Are there only a few of us out there (I think not!)

Leave comments here or read the article and comment on my blog, I'd like to follow this up with another posting soon collating peoples comments and thoughts!

Although I wrote mainly about nonprofit technology am really intrigued at other sectors too, inc. government, education and business.
See my post here: http://laura.popokatea.co.uk/2007/10/19/women-working-in-non-profit...

Thanks!

Hi Laura,

Certainly where I am, on the North Coast of NSW, in education, the majority of up takers of technology would most definitely be women. In fact, women seem to also be doing the project planning, the funding applications, the team building, the training and the reporting. Maybe this is just where I live and work... there's a fairly strong female contingent. But then, in my social networks.. it's fairly even.

Regards,
Alex

I didn't realise until the BB31days challenge how forward Australia was with everything technological and using it to communicate and learn in a wider sphere. I've been learning lots from you all and trying to share it wider over here in ye ole UK!

I agree, Laura--the Aussies are blowing a lot of US institutions out of the water, too!

Glad to hear Aussies Rock! If you think about it we are isolated in Australia (especially Perth which is one of the most isolated capital cities in the World) so we have to find effective methods of communication. Although lets be honest our power is in our networks and we all have a global network which helps us innovate.

That's true, Sue--I never really thought about it that way. I'm honestly most impressed with what you're doing in vocational Ed. We're very backward in the US when it comes to using these technologies for those programs and I think it's to the detriment of our students--keeps them locked into lower-level jobs.

I agree, Aussies rock. You are ahead of us in SO many ways. Also in some of the visual stuff. Your conferences always look so great with more cutting edge content. I have been so grateful to hook in with all of you to hear about what you are up to.

Coming in late to this one gals, but Ning hasn't been kind to me. Now suddenly, it's working. Couldn't resist with all the Aussie love-fest stuff. Actually we are the biggest up-takers of technology in the world per capita ... apparently, so that could explain why we are comfortable with using all the techno stuff. BTW we don't pay for inbound SMS messages. Sue will relate to this, being into m-learning in a big way ... despite the fact that all the smart-phone goodies still cost too much, this is a big plus for creative SMS learning. Now what might that be I wonder? Or is it already happening ...

Hi Kate - great to hear you can 'Ning' again!
I'm absolutely amazed still at how far advanced you all are there, and working with people over here to learn and understand your good practice. Fingers crossed we may catch up one day soon!
